PUKETAWA & SLIP TRACKS

Discover a walk through a private protected native rainforest home to Kiwi and so much more.  Pause to listen and see numerous native bird species and soak in the stunning views of the mountains and surrounding landscapes.

These tracks were carved out of the bush by three not so young enthusiastic tough ladies with a passion for nurturing our land, and sharing it with the public.

A koha of $5 is requested to help with conservation efforts, develop, maintain and keep these tracks safe. (Cash or bank deposit).  Maps and guide notes available at the gate box.

Two options:

  • Slip track - 1 - 1.5 hour circuit
  • Puketawa track - 2-2.5 hour circuits. (Total climb of 220m)

The self guided hike and go through beautiful native bush home to a multitude of birds that you will hear chirping in the canopies above.

The view from the top is a spectacular vista of Mt Ruapehu.

There is an option to walk along the top of the hill to a Māori pou believed to be Papatūānuku with his son Tāwhirimātea on his shoulder. (This section is guided and by arrangement only)

A moderate level of fitness is required.  This is not a refined family walking track but totally worth the effort.

On the walk down you come to the picnic area which has been set up with native wood tables, a toilet, drinking water and umbrellas.
